1) “The Heritage Trail…  Including Reverend King’s Dream Tour / Atlanta University Center District Tour”

Sunday, July 10 (1:00pm – 5:00pm)  (STILL AVAILABLE)

Martin-Luther-King-I-have-a-dream

Welcome to Atlanta and a cultural journey through time as you discover who we are…from Civil War to Civil Rights to International Host City of the Centennial Olympic Games.

Enjoy an overview of the city and hear the story of how this tiny railroad terminus grew to be an international city. The world came to Atlanta in 1996 and we will share some of our best legacies from the Centennial Olympic Games.

Long before there was a Martin Luther King, Jr., there was an Auburn Avenue cradling a strong black community that left its mark on this city, this country, and indeed the world. As we travel down “Sweet Auburn,” you will see the former home of Atlanta Life Insurance Company, founded by a former slave by the name of Alonzo Herndon.

We will stop at the King Historic District.  At the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change, get an inside look at the timeline of Dr. King’s life and ministry.  See historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King preached his first and last sermon.  Stand before his tomb and read the familiar words, “Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, I am free at last.”  A driving tour by his birth home will complete our visit to the King District. Bring your camera!

Next is a drive through the campus of the Atlanta University Complex; home of Atlanta’s well known Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to include Clark-Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Morris Brown College and the Interdenominational Theological Center. Learn the history of these schools that have produced a remarkable list of prominent alumni.

Tour Time: 4 hours

Enjoy an overview of the city and her famous Peachtree Street. We’ll tell you the stories of how this tiny railroad terminus grew to be an international city with a tour of the campus of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Consortium, which is the world’s largest consortium of African American private institutions of higher education. The Consortium is a vital part of Atlanta’s African-American heritage. Members of the consortium are the highly esteemed Clark-Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Morris Brown College and the Interdenominational Theological Center were founding members, but no longer belong to the AUC Consortium.

The AUC campuses are located in the Atlanta University Center neighborhood, near downtown Atlanta, southwest of the new Mercedes Benz football stadium. The schools’ early histories date from the end of the Civil War through the Reconstruction era, when these institutions were established to educate newly freed slaves. The past, present and future of these illustrious institutions is a source of pride for Atlantans, students and alumni.

We will stretch out legs on one of the campuses and drive by the Herndon Home, the former home of Atlanta’s first Black millionaire. The Atlanta University Center claims a remarkable list of prominent alumni. Some of the most notable are Marva Collins, Maynard Jackson, Marian Wright Edelman, Pearl Cleage, James Weldon Johnson, Alice Walker, Samuel L. Jackson, Emmanuel Lewis, Keisha Knight Pulliam, Esther Rolle, Ralph Abernathy, Julian Bond, Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, David Satcher, Louis Sullivan, Edwin Moses, Kenny Leon, Spike Lee and Lerone Bennett.
